#If we are still talking about use in riots, I think appearance is also

#are, but the SPAS-12 or Ithica's "Hand Grip" model, for example, _look_
#morwe dangerous than an ordinary shotgun. This certainly shouldn't be
#the deciding factor as to which gun to buy, but it's something to keep
#in mind.

don't bet your life on the SPAS-12. That has got to be the biggest
piece of crap I've ever had my hands on, followed closely by
the StreetSweeper. A pawn shop owner friend of mine has had two
of these things. Neither would empty a full load without jamming.
And it is so complicated that I had to sit down and study it intently
in order to figure out how to jack the first round in. hey, with the
government fearing us owning the likes of this, what do we have to
worry about? :-)

My favorite riot shotgun is my old WW1 Trench pump. That it holds
10 rounds is nice but the icing on the cake is the 18" bayonette.
THAT strikes fear in even the worst of 'em.

#One thing I've heard, but never seen, about the action of a "trench"
#shotgun: If you work the pump while holding down the trigger, will the
#gun fire? That is, is rapid fire (probably unaimed) possible by holding
#the trigger down and sliding the pump back and forth?

Absolutely. I forgot to mention that as another benefit. It is surprisingly
accurate in that mode. I can easily hit something the size of a
milpark target with all rounds at 10 yards or so pumping at maximum
effort.
